2 DAYS \\ REAL WILDERNESS KAYAKING
For travellers, more than tourists:
This two day trip is about allowing yourself some quality time to experience a personal adventure, a genuine kayaking and camping experience in a remote New Zealand environment, in a natural, non-intrusive way, that respects what Fiordland's wilderness is all about and expresses what real sea kayaking is all about:
doing it yourself with minimal impact, in a small personal group (maximum 8 people)
with a friendly, knowledgeable, local guide;
being on the water up close and personal in a sea kayak
in the sound of silence without a motorboat following us;
discovering the land, camping in the primal rainforest
(no generator, great camping area, quality gear and communal insect shelter);
experiencing nature's cycles...its changing moods and light and time;
becoming aware of Fiordland's inhabitants in their own wild environment;
understanding the importance of wilderness areas like Doubtful Sound
in the future of this planet of ours...
and having some fun along the way!

When you make your booking you will also be asked to provide your weight and height (for gear sizing) and your accommodation in Te Anau or Manapouri. We need to know where to meet you the morning of departure and to give you the time of pick up.

A DESCRIPTION OF THE TWO DAYS
Note: Weather conditions, wildlife encounters determine the actual kayak route.
DAY 1 The journey there... as dawn breaks
Stage 1: departing Te Anau early in the morning, your wilderness experience begins as the sun rises with a 30km boat journey across stunning Lake Manapouri and 24 kms by vehicle over Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove where as kayakers, we stop using fuel and emitting carbon, the only ones to do so. Time to change, pack kayaks and go through a safety briefing.
The sea kayaking and camping...unlike anywhere else in the world
Stage 2: the daytime - approximately 5 hours kayaking from Deep Cove in the midst of massive glacial landscapes, deeply faulted mountainsides, towering sea cliffs, waterfalls, past Rolla Island, a nesting place for penguins often with fur seals, sometimes dolphins, lunch on an uninhabited beach, pristine native rainforest with kea, kaka flying high, to Mt Danae at the head of Hall Arm
Stage 3: the evening - a night camping by ourselves beside a fresh water stream in the ancient podocarp rainforest, time to explore or be still and as dusk descends the nocturnal calls of morepork and weka, often kiwi, glow worms, the night sky or evening mist - an eerie mythical place, the natural world as it once was...untouched pure wilderness.
DAY 2
Stage 4: a new day - the morning stillness of Hall Arm broken by the call of native bellbirds and tomtits; its mirror waters rippled by our kayaks. A sense of brooding power kayaking into Malispina Reach, hopefully around Elizabeth Island then returning under sail if possible to Deep Cove in the early afternoon for pack up and lunch.
Stage 5: The journey home...
back across Wilmot Pass and Lake Manapouri to Te Anau - a really full and rewarding two days. And maybe meet up again that evening for a beer, a wine, a meal? If we can't kayak on any one of the two day in Doubtful Sound, the kayaking is replaced by a launch cruise, or the value of the launch cruise is refunded.
