FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What about the weather?
It happens in Fiordland and it's part of its dramatic beauty. Prepare for anything at any time - 4 seasons in one day can happen. We don't cancel due to rain as it's great for ballistic waterfalls and all that happens is that we get wet. We base our decisions on the marine weather forecast which indicates likely wind direction and strength, our main concern. We use proper double sea kayaks with rudders on our guided trips so that if the weather does change we can raft up and make the most of the prevailing conditions, sailing and surfing.

2. What do I bring and what is provided?
See EQUIPMENT section for details of what we provide and what you need to bring. For multi-day tours for guided and education groups we give you a detailed equipment list either when booking or at the pre-tour meeting - great to tick off while you are packing.

3. What about the sandflies?
Yes it's true - use insect repellent, wear clothes that cover rather than expose and don't let the little pests get you down! We provide insect shelters on both guided and rental overnight tours - great for cooking and relaxing. Sandflies are not a problem on the water.

4. How safe is it, am I fit enough, do I need experience?
See separate SAFETY section including the Risk Disclosure and the GENERAL INFO. section. Our detailed safety briefings and ongoing instruction give skills and confidence, meaning very few capsizes in a season particularly with the double kayaks. Moderate fitness is good - if the going gets tough you still need to paddle your own kayak - double kayaks are great because you can share the load!

5. Guided or Rental tour?
See GENERAL INFO. section. Guided tours: ideal for those with or without experience - a professional guide makes the decisions, gives paddling instruction, adds local flavour, interprets natural and social history. We are not offering rental kayaking this season.

6. What is the minimum age?
On our normal group tours the minimum age is 16. We offer specially organised trips for families and schools on the lakes (minimum age 12 years) but each member must be big and strong enough to use a paddle.

7. Can we fish?
We do not fish on our guided trips in the fiords due to their fragile ecosystems. You are most welcome to fish for trout on the lakes.

8. Where can we camp?
On guided trips we take care of that. Camping is allowed on the many beaches around the lakes. Camping in the fiords is limited. Our maps show camping possibilities and DOC huts - only one hut in Doubtful Sound.

9...and yes
you will end up with wet feet! So bring socks with soft shoes or sandals for kayaking and a change of footwear for all tours.

10. Will I return on time?Yes normally but very rarely, weather could delay your scheduled return by up to 24 hours.
